"you dont see the potential clients that you dismiss."
That is me. I agree that time should be billable. If the market is that lucrative, then it should be an indicator to the gravity of the industry. Meaning,...pony up and build the website.... But when developers terminate conversations because of a "conference call" and how.... they aspire to bill for their time etc....they need a better way of extracting the information from "prospects" so as to not let the conversation ramble beyond productive useful dialog. I don't care about the developers making more money that CEO's because it is a trade. A trade that still needs clients. We are now poised to discuss whether it is a buyers or a sellers market. Obviously at $100 an hour it is a sellers market.

Most places that discuss pricing for design, never seem to mention the price of the software. Of course, you can knock out a webpage in Notepad, but realistically speaking, nobody uses notepad for website design. Most have a program or two. If I just stick with the Adobe Suite, assuming you actually PAID for the software, you will have to shell out between 1,300-1,800 bucks depending on the type of suite you purchase. Clients seem to forget (or simply not know/care) that most people legitimately purchase their software, and that can be quite expensive.

Hey Chris, your demeanor and felling about the whole subject could not be more accurate and right on.

I've been in the field for a few years and am starting to land higher profile clients. By far, I have come to the realization that SEO is king. A beautiful and shiny web site is nothing if people can’t find it. This is the value I like to pass on to my clients, and what they tend to pay for. And by no means do I pitch or offer mediocre design concepts to clients. In the beginning, I was forced to adjust the quality (design time and effort) for clients on lower budgets.
I have seen first-hand, and on numerous occasions, that a mediocre, yet scalable design is just as effective as a shiny site with all the bells and whistles if the SEO is done effectively! If you can afford the bells and whistles they definitely don’t hurt, but are not completely necessary if you don’t have the high budget. SEO is king and what any person seeking web site design should hold in top priority
Love the Blog,

1500USD for a one off investment on a website is not that much I think. I also want to add, web design is an art. An art where the novice could outshine the master. The problem or the confusion occurs when the "business men" take over and corrupt the art and try to sell quantity and not quality. I compare web design with the music industry, often the artists talent gets wasted because record label bosses are only in it for the money. I think once it becomes all about making money, then quality goes out the window. Cheap template sites, 50 bucks a website guys, outsourcing, are ruining it all.

As a web designer, I am an artist who wants to make a living but also genuinely give something in return. I am not a business man.

We should not be worried by scaring clients because "Real recognizes Real"

Good points!
Although design is important for branding purpose too. It makes people remember your site. Google or Yahoo! logo design are very well know since they are so emphasized on the site. It’s all about the user experience which is build up of many aspects.

Good article about the cost of a professional webdesign. Yes a good design could be made by none professionals als Patrick says, but you need some knowledge befor you begin... Because everybody thing's his design is professional but only a few know it. So a good webdesign wil need a goog knowledge, and this will cost money. That's it.
