2007 Bloggy Awards Nomination

Completely out of the blue, I learned on Friday that Pearsonified was nominated for a 2007 Bloggy Award. Specifically, I’m a finalist in the “Best Designed Weblog” category, which is pretty cool considering my name is out there alongside Veerle Pieters and Khoi Vinh, two people whose work I’ve referenced and linked up in the past. I don’t know how I got nominated or who was responsible, but to whoever had a hand in things — thank you!

Now, head on over to the Bloggy Awards site and give me a vote, eh? And while you’re there, vote for my dawg Brian of Copyblogger, who was nominated for the “Best Web Development Weblog.” Heck, Copyblogger’s tips have helped to make this site successful over the past year, and if it weren’t for his development ideas, I probably wouldn’t have gotten nominated at all. Now how’s that for a circuitous bit of back scratching?

You’ve got my ten votes…

#Chris P.  at 8:47 am on Jan 28, 2007

Ha, go ahead and Digg swarm it for me…I’ll need all the help I can get!

#El Duderino  at 9:16 am on Jan 28, 2007

Your site’s way, way up there, but I still voted for Veerle just because she deals with so much visual content so effectively.

#Chris P.  at 9:18 am on Jan 28, 2007

Fair enough, but you didn’t follow my instructions. I specifically told you to go and vote for me :)

#El Duderino  at 9:28 am on Jan 28, 2007

Touche! El Duderino, to the skies!

#Brian Clark  at 9:45 am on Jan 28, 2007

Don’t worry man… *I* voted for you.

Now, if I can only figure out the Krug method to get 9 more shots, you should be in…

#David Krug  at 10:12 am on Jan 28, 2007

It’s cake vote behind a proxy with an email dumper.

mycoolemail+gopearson@gmail.com
mycoolemail+deucerocks@gmail.com

Any myriad of combinations and hiding behind a proxy will do just fine.

#Leonard Klaatu  at 10:18 am on Jan 28, 2007

A nomination well deserved. Good luck.

#Leah Maclean  at 12:16 pm on Jan 28, 2007

You deserve extra “helpful and creative dude” kudos for all the work you put into the wordpress goodness that you share with those of us less fortunate. Well done!

#Aaron Bobrink  at 12:27 pm on Jan 28, 2007

You got my vote. Although Veerle does have a pretty blog, yours is superior in my opinion. It’s much cleaner and I like clean stuff.

Good luck!

#Chris P.  at 1:09 pm on Jan 28, 2007

Leonard, Leah, and Aaron — Thanks guys! Between Veerle and Khoi, I should probably be happy with a third place finish.

Either way, when I tried to vote, I never actually received the confirmation email, and I spoke with a friend of mine who experienced the same issue.

Anyone else having the same problem?

#Aaron Bobrink  at 1:35 pm on Jan 28, 2007

Actually, yeah. I have that exact same problem. I voted about three hours ago and never got my email.

#Mike  at 2:33 pm on Jan 28, 2007

Well I nominated you but I get the feeling that it probably took more than just the one nomination to get to this stage! Anyway, whatever, congrats on getting to the finals - will be sure to vote for both you and Brian.

Cheers,

Mike

#Lisa  at 4:45 pm on Jan 28, 2007

Congrats on the nomination, Chris - you got my vote. Hey, I’ve been searching for your contact info on your site and gave up and decided to de-lurk myself instead :) If you could drop me an email, I have a quick question regarding a project I’m currently working on, and your Cutline theme.

Cheers!

#Vic  at 5:38 pm on Jan 28, 2007

Congratulations on your will deserved nomination, my vote for you has already been submitted and counted. Hopefully this doesn’t mean any project rate changes will occur in the near future. :-)

#Peter Flaschner  at 5:52 pm on Jan 28, 2007

Way to go Chris! Got my vote.

#Chris P.  at 6:38 pm on Jan 28, 2007

Sorry Vic, everything is tripled from here on out!

#Chris P.  at 7:53 pm on Jan 28, 2007

Lisa, Peter — Thanks a million!

I just noticed the new design over at the Blog Studio, and I really dig the gratuitous use of Avenir. Classy indeed!

#Wayde Christie  at 8:32 pm on Jan 28, 2007

You got my vote ;)

#Mike  at 9:05 pm on Jan 28, 2007

I went and voted for both the dawgs … CP and BC.

Good luck to you both !

#AL  at 9:41 pm on Jan 28, 2007

Yeah I really loved the design of your blog first time I laid eyes on it. You’ve got my vote as well.

#TDH  at 11:41 pm on Jan 28, 2007

You know that you got my vote, buddy. :) And I’m chipping one in for Brian as well, since Copyblogger kicks ass.

#Phil  at 12:35 am on Jan 29, 2007

Hey Chris, you definitely get my vote. I never get tired of your site no matter how many times I visit, it’s always interesting and ‘fresh’.

Secondly, thanks for all your great work and content (incl. Cutline and Tubetorial), its helped me in a big way!

#JasonM  at 2:37 am on Jan 29, 2007

Deinfitely got my vote too.

#Peter Flaschner  at 3:37 am on Jan 29, 2007

Thanks Chris. I’m a sucker for Avenir. I’m a fan of most of Frutiger’s work, and think Avenir is his masterpiece (so far…)

#Chris P.  at 4:00 am on Jan 29, 2007

I’ll second that, although I’m currently involved with Avenir’s second cousin, Gotham. Come to think of it, I’ve never bothered to ask Avenir how she felt about that…

You know what? I like Gotham so much that I really don’t even care. :)

#Roberta  at 4:49 am on Jan 29, 2007

I voted for ya…this is the best designed site out there :)
Good luck, hope ya win!!

#Nani  at 7:09 am on Jan 29, 2007

A nomination well-deserved. You’ve got my vote and any others I can rustle up. :)

#Clarke  at 8:10 am on Jan 29, 2007

Chris, you got my vote on this as Pearsonified is one of my favorite blogs for content and design.

#Leonard Klaatu  at 8:27 am on Jan 29, 2007

Hey, Chris - when are you going to take on new clients? I know a business that would be interested in talking with you.

#Rich Schefren  at 1:29 pm on Jan 29, 2007

Chris,

Now that I voted for you can you shoot me an email so we can work on that project?

#Ross  at 6:56 am on Jan 30, 2007

#Lucia  at 7:49 pm on Jan 30, 2007

There isn’t any reason I can think of why you don’t deserve it :)

Congrats on the same…!

#digitalnomad  at 9:42 am on Apr 27, 2007

This is a terrific design. Are there tutorials somewhere to shoe how to customize wordpress like this?

I am just starting out with WP and want to do it right.

Thanks

#Dave Butler  at 3:33 pm on May 10, 2007

Chris, make sure you post again on this topic or update the post with the final results.
it would beinteresting for you to pull apart from a design perspective the winning or another top blog.

#digitalnomad  at 3:44 pm on May 10, 2007

Don’t know if this cat answers comments…I had a question about a week ago. Guess not.

Looks aren’t everything.

#digitalnomad  at 3:44 pm on May 10, 2007

Make that two weeks ago…

#Chris P.  at 3:50 pm on May 10, 2007

Nomad — I’d have to write a book to do the topic justice. My WordPress themes are 100% customized from the back-end XHTML and use of WordPress template tags through the CSS that styles it.

I originally learned WordPress by slogging through existing themes and then modifying the code to my liking. After a while, I knew enough to start out on my own, and that’s when I created Cutline, this version of Pearsonified, and Tubetorial.

At this point, I think Cutline is a pretty good starting point for anyone attempting to learn WordPress because it’s a bare-bones template that doesn’t involve any hocus-pocus JavaScript or even special PHP queries to produce output. It’s just template tags, XHTML, and CSS—a pretty pure learning environment.

#Dave Butler  at 5:47 pm on May 10, 2007

Note to nomad, Chris P is the man when it comes to comments. When he ran the show at Cutline that’s what made the whole thing great. He commented all the time helping people.

Chris what happened with the contest.

Also whats the Chris master plan post Cutline purchase. Did you sign a non-compete in the blog design field???

#digitalnomad  at 7:35 pm on May 10, 2007

Thanks for the answer man…did not know you sold this.

#Chris P.  at 8:36 am on May 11, 2007

Dave — I did not win the Bloggy, and I’m not sure where I finished among the other participants. Gizmodo won, and while the design is reasonably intelligent (and utilizes the Gotham font, which is big ups in my book), I think it’s kind of a drag that a site using the Gawker Media template won the award…

Personally, I would have preferred to see a completely unique site like Veerle’s blog or Subtraction win, but that’s just me. Honestly, I was really surprised that Gizmodo won.

And regarding a non-compete… no way I would do that! I’m kind of attached to this space, no?
